On Student Culture & Diversity: We don't see a lot of diversity in Alpena. A few of the diverse students in our school came from Detroit or Flint, and have drug issues, or are illegal immigrants, so a lot of times, the other diverse students that are living perfectly normal and legal lives are grouped with those few students that are creating bad names for themselves. A lot of students are not accepted within the school. A few of the kids have been adopted by certain groups, although sometimes it's just so they can make fun of the kid even more. Sexual orientation is one of the issues that our school is fairly accepting of. Usually students raise a big fuss when they find out at first, but for the most part, every student is treated the same in regards to sexual orientation.

On Health & Safety: Just yesterday, they found a kid with a pellet gun in his locker. It was locker clean-out day, so who knows how long it had been in there. Fortunately, nothing happened with the gun. This isn't the only time the school's had a threat. Our liaison officer is a school-wide joke. OT, as he's called, is mostly known for tasing a kid that stole an apple and for handing out parking tickets. People are more scared of the security guard, Janie. I think our school can handle small threats - fights usually get broken up pretty quickly. If any kind of real, large threat or incident occurred, I would not really feel safe.

On Food: Although a lot of the students complain about the lunch, I also hear a lot of kids getting excited about specific lunch days - sub bar, grilled cheese day, etc.

On Sports & Fitness: Most of the teams in our school aren't competitive, some of them even against schools two or three ranks below us. Students don't have a big showing to most sports, except hockey, football, and occasionally boys basketball if they're winning. Students put down the teams more than they support them, and even the teams don't have too much spirit. Many of the coaches are completely inadequate, and as a former member of a team at the school, I can say I was not treated very well by either the other players or the coaching staff. Somehow, though, even with the lack of spirit and the lack of wins, kids that play sports are definitely given special treatment, even by the liaison officer.

On Administration & Policies: The head principal is almost too involved, but he does a great job. The assistant principals, most of the secretaries, and other administration, though, don't seem too involved in the school. Most of the principals don't attend school events, unless they have a personal interest in them. Bullying does not seem to be handled very well, and policies that are created about many of things in the school are enforced for a couple of days, then students are allowed to revert to their old ways. Many of the rules in the policy manual are not actually school rules, they are rules that teachers can choose to apply if they want to, which means most students only follow maybe a three-quarters of the rules.
