On Academics: The only reason I didn't give the highest rating is because of SOLs, which cause problems for teachers and students alike. If teachers didn't have to teach to that curriculum, the students would be better educated for it.

On Food: Thanks to Michelle Obama, our school now has to comply with rules about "healthy" ingredients that have done nothing to contribute to the health of our students, but have driven up lunch prices and led students to simply skip lunch. It might cut down on obesity in the short-term, but skipping meals is extremely unhealthy and will cause more problems for those students in the long run.

On Teachers: Most schools don't have the dedicated kind of teachers we have. They get paid less than almost any other teachers in our state, and many of them stay after school most days of the week to tutor students who are struggling. I know of a few who've stayed until nine or ten o'clock at night to help students catch up on makeup work-- and this is normal for my school.

On Extracurriculars: I'm one of the least involved people at my school-- I only do marching, jazz, and concert bands and the scholastic bowl competitions. Almost everyone is involved in extracurricular activities, and there are lots of clubs. They don't have much money, so we have to do our own fundraising, but everyone works hard and pitches in so we're able to participate in activities.

On Health & Safety: Honestly, bullying isn't much of an issue. If a student is having an issue and someone goes to an adult about it, it will get dealt with. The real issue is students' unwillingness to talk to adults-- and that's not the adults' fault, it's because teenagers think they can handle everything themselves. I don't recall ever hearing of a suicide or anything like that by a student at my school, and when they know about it, teachers will bend over backwards to help their students in bullying situations. Bullying isn't very prevalent anyway, and people make a bigger deal out of it than it really is by considering any rude treatment to be bullying instead of addressing actual instances.
