With regard to the AAP program, the staff, and overall community are very tight-knit and competitive.
Disappointed, a few bright spots. Got reports of boys fighting in hallways & regularly going into girls bathrooms after school. Teachers allow students to retake tests on which they do poorly, so they don't learn to do it right the 1st time. Teachers assign youtube videos rather than teach. Had some racially & politically charged assignments. During online learning, one teacher had a political banner in full view of the camera. Kid, after one assignment following racial unrest, asking to transfer schools because of how some kids treated her. A couple teachers, specifically science and algebra, were excellent & maintained good discipline. Despite being in 'honors' classes & getting A's, our child's SOL scores were in the 60%/70% range. No actual books, everything online or in handouts so it's almost impossible to see what the kids are being taught if you don't actively monitor them. Kid strongly disliked school meals. Most teachers responsive & accommodating when contacted.
Mark Twain Middle School in Alexandria, VA has an excellent music program with a very talented music director, Professor Helm. The same applies to Mr. Kniesly’s science classes with his incorporated chicken coop project, the monkey bread making in family consumer sciences and Mrs. Gadson’s engineering class where kids make and launch their own rockets. Both of my boys really loved this school, it’s diversity and the caring teacher involvement. Keep up the good work!
