Overall Experience: Overall, my experience at American Fork High has been a good one.

Not being LDS, it has been annoying to have to put up with such a large population of them (not just because they're Mormon, but because there are so many of them other opinions get overshadowed), but for the most part it hasn't been too much of an obstacle. I think there is still a lot of work to be done to improve diversity, class sizes, and judgement of students. High school students can be rude, but it's worse when that behavior is supported by their sunday school class and family.

I've been involved in science and the science department has been extremely helpful! The teachers are great and we got new lab rooms this year with a lot of really nice equipment.

The band program is great overall, but the teachers could be better. The band built most of it's reputation when Mike Huestis taught percussion, but the percussion program went through a lot of changes and was left with a terrible, close minded jerk of a teacher...but that was apparently the best option. The band conductor himself has been there for too long and should retire. He is very close minded about a lot of issues. In addition, the band strives for unity, but what it really needs is a decent conductor.

American Fork High School is not the worst school, but it certainly isn't' the best. I guess I'm proud to be a caveman, but it really isn't that big of deal.

Food: I personally don't eat school lunch, but I do know that some options are better than others. They do a pretty good job of providing a healthy option with the whole meal, but as a whole it's probably not the best. The other problem is we only get about 35 minutes for lunch and all 2,000 students go to lunch at the same time. If you have a car, there are a few restaurants within about two miles, you just have to be quick if you want to make it back in time.

Administration & Policies: The Administration is bias about many different things, very subjective, and it seems like they really don't care that much about the student body. This school also has the stupidest attendance policy. A student can only have three excused absences/class and after that they have to go to "attendance school" which is just sitting in a room for an hour working on homework and if attendance school isn't completed the student receives a No-Credit in the class. I've known really smart people not graduate because they got screwed by the attendance policy. In addition, if the attendance isn't made up by the last two weeks of the term, the student has to pay to attend.

Sports & Fitness: Aside from cross country, there really isn't anything special about the sports here. We have a spirit club that does their best to support each game, but it can end up where they care more about the "school spirit" than the actual sport on the field. There is high attendance when we play our rival, Lone Peak, but other than that, I think the baseball team has won state a few times, football went to state for the first time in forever a little bit ago, but the cross country is amazing. They win state and place at nationals every year. The boys team is a little more successful than the girls team, but this last year the girls team kept up with the boys team for the most part.

Teachers: There isn't a general type of teacher at AFHS. Every teacher really just has to be judged individually. The math and science departments have some of the most dedicated, helpful, passionate teachers in the school. They are really amazing. The english department is a little more random, some are good, some not so good, some just plain bad. Then there's the coach/teacher in some departments that really couldn't care less about their students.
