Overall, my experience at American Fork High has been a good one.
Not being LDS, it has been annoying to have to put up with such a large population of them (not just because they're Mormon, but because there are so many of them other opinions get overshadowed), but for the most part it hasn't been too much of an obstacle. I think there is still a lot of work to be done to improve diversity, class sizes, and judgement of students. High school students can be rude, but it's worse when that behavior is supported by their sunday school class and family.
I've been involved in science and the science department has been extremely helpful! The teachers are great and we got new lab rooms this year with a lot of really nice equipment.
The band program is great overall, but the teachers could be better. The band built most of it's reputation when Mike Huestis taught percussion, but the percussion program went through a lot of changes and was left with a terrible, close minded jerk of a teacher...but that was apparently the best option. The band conductor himself has been there for too long and should retire. He is very close minded about a lot of issues. In addition, the band strives for unity, but what it really needs is a decent conductor.
American Fork High School is not the worst school, but it certainly isn't' the best. I guess I'm proud to be a caveman, but it really isn't that big of deal.
