When I was in 7th grade, I would hear about the stress and ridicule that was seen and given at East Chapel Hill. I thought they were lying to me. Still, at that age, I thought to myself, "It can't be that bad," but in reality, it is that bad. Don't get me wrong, I haven't hated my time at East, but the experiences I have are definitely not what I deem normal for high school. When I say this, there is an obvious need for clarification. The main component that sticks out to me the most is the desire from what seems to be the entire student body to either go to UNC Chapel Hill or an ivy league. This can be seen in everything within the school, whether it's the tons of clubs and non-profits that are abandoned the second they graduate or the 7 APs that the average student takes Jr year. Not only that but also the competitiveness inside the school on who gets into the more prestigious school or who gets the better F1 grades. This to me is no normal public highschool.
I have had some horrible teachers in the past. This is because they know that no matter what they do, they won’t get fired. This is because there is not enough teachers applying for jobs right now, so there is a shortage of teachers. This has resulted in my worst grades coming from these classes, as the teachers don’t teach, instead they expect us to find all of the answers on google. This a problem because google is not always correct, and we don’t know how to know if we are right or not. This leads to me and many other students failing tests from that class. Besides this problem, there are some teachers that I have made great connections with. These specific teachers have encouraged me to move on and try again as I will have second chances.
Over the course of my high school career the school has changed drastically and went through multiple administrations and large amounts of rule changes, and although this current administration is lacking in its own ways it has improved the school greatly in terms of violence and threats. the major problems currently are academic violations, cheating seems to go unchecked and it is overlooked by teachers and administration alike, and grade inflation, classes are meant to be easier to inflate the academic outlook at the school, which is also highly supported by the district mandated 50% floor policy left over from covid.
