Resources & Facilities: The school is very large, well-kept, with plenty of lockers--students do not need to share lockers. parents are not especially involved although they participate in fund-raising events for their children. Bussing is not provided by the school, but students may purchase discount passes for local buses.

Overall Experience: I would absolutely send my student to ETHS again if she could do it all over. We might make a few course changes but no radical changes. Classes and extracurriculars have often been remarkable and challenging. The students, on the whole, are great kids.

Teachers: There are a few bad apples (teachers) at ETHS, which currently has 3100 students, but it also has some of the best teachers in the country. The math department recently received a national award for the excellence of its teaching. It is very difficult to determine if a teacher is consistent in grading. Teachers are very well paid at the school and the school looks for the best when hiring. There are more African-American teachers here than may be found in many schools. My student thinks that of the 62 credit hours she took, only 1 year-long course (2 credits) and 3 semester-long courses (3 credits) were weak.

Health & Safety: ETHS has both a nurse's office for students who feel sick during the day, and a Health Center with a doctor where they can receive checkups and other health care. There are security guards at each unlocked entrance of the school and guards also stand in the hallways and direct students who may be wandering. Bullying is unpopular, but happens on occasion. The school has counselors to deal with students' emotional issues. Health and wellness are also taught in a Wellness course in sophomore year. Illinois mandates that all high school students receive 7 semesters of Physical Education and 1 semester of Wellness instruction, and ETHS does a good job with P.E. courses. Upper classmen have interesting offerings in P.E. The school also offers dance classes and there is a weekly extracurricular yoga class that anyone can join. I think the school is safe for all students and the administration appears to be genuine in its concern for all students.
