Crude and authoritarian, although it was beginning to improve slightly in my senior year with a new principal. But the one before him was openly abrasive towards most students, while dotting on her "favorites", who was any athlete or student who brought attention to the school. The dress code was dated and viciously sexist. Suspension was the preferred mode of punishment, pushing out the people who needed help most, likely causing many to drop out. Ironically this was a punishment often used to punish skipping (way to give the kids what they want!). A very irrational, uncaring, and lazy administrative leadersip.

The office staff and guidance counselors however, were generally genial, knowledgeable, and helpful.

The school facility is in above average condition as compared to the facilities in our area. Not all classes, but a good amount of them are becoming more technologically advanced in the way of SmartBoards, projectors, and similar equipment. The guidance counselor a are very interested in their students, and what we decide to pursue after our high school education. They do not push us to follow either track (professional or skilled), and are very helpful when deciding what courses their students would most benefit from. Tutoring is offered almost every day after school, but on certain days. For instance, math might be offered Tuesday and Thursday, where as science is offered Wednesday and Thursday. English may only be offered one day a week, etc. Busing is average, I would say. The busses do not have air conditioning, however, which may come in handy during the hotter months. Parent involvement is above average, there are at least 4 parent teacher conference nights per year, and personal conferences may always be scheduled.

While I had a wonderful experience in the marching band program, I would not do it all again. This town, and this school are way too interested in athletics. The band received hardly any praise for being state champs for four years. The football team, however, was mentioned on the schools announcements daily. Athletics are known for housing the least intelligent of students, whereas band houses the most intelligent. Knowing this, we as a community should give at lest some recognition to the band which is at school for an additional 2 hours on Mondays, every other Wednesday, and attends all football games that are within reasonable distance. Even when the football games cannot be attended, the marching band is working hard for three hours on Fridays to perfect our marching show for the year. I would not attend Martinsburg High School again, or send my children for the simple fact that our priorities as a community are all wrong, and I am deeply disappointed by this.
