Overall Experience: The dress code is annoying, especially because mountain brook doesn't have one. But the school is very active in community service and giving back. Most teachers are great but you will have at least one a year that sucks, normally in the science department.

Extracurriculars: At Vestavia, we're required to sign up for a club every year. You meet with that club monthly, and usually the clubs are charity based or sports based. If charity based, you have to complete a certain amount of service hours in order to stay in the club, which can be extremely difficult and tiring since just about every student organization in the school also requires a large amount of service hours.

Other than clubs, extracurriculars like band, theatre and other art departments? Extremely under-funded. The students in these activities are genuinely committed and hardworking, but they just don't get the funding to fulfill their potential. But if you want to find a friend group in this school other than the majority-popular-frat/sorority kid group, your only hope is to join an art department.

Academics: Generally it's an academically challenging school. But warning! If you enter in freshman year taking Geometry and sophomore year taking Alg 2/Trig and Chemistry, you will be forced to take a bunch of very difficult classes your senior year, as there are no other options unless you want to drop down your diploma type.

Student Culture & Diversity: As I've stated in almost every other category, the student culture & diversity is simply awful at Vestavia. If you asked any student in the Birmingham area what a "Vestavia kid" was like, they could tell you in a heartbeat. A typical Vestavia kid is rich, snobby, athletic, and surprisingly very motivated to get good grades. They also drink all the time and are typically racist, homophobic, sexist and any other type of un-accepting adjective you can think of. If you haven't noticed, our mascot is the Rebel Man and our school flag is an altered version of the Confederate flag. Last year on the morning announcements, the principle kindly asked the students to please stop decorating their cars with Confederate flags. Within seconds, I could hear an uproar of angry, racist students coming from nearly every classroom on my hall. If I had to describe the typical Vestavia student in one word, it's close minded.

Luckily, there are a large amount of students at Vestavia, so obviously not every student is like that. In fact, there's a pretty large amount of students that aren't anything like that. However, they are definitely NOT the popular kids.

Overall Experience: Most students, including myself, have a lot of bad stuff to say about Vestavia. You pretty commonly hear students saying, "I can't wait to leave this awful place" or "I hate everyone here". But when it comes down to it, it's a pretty good school. Tons of technology available and a lot of student involvement with charity work. The biggest issues surrounding this school are social issues, and those can be found at most high schools. It's definitely not impossible to make it through Vestavia without being a typical Vestavia kid, but you'll probably come out on the other side thankful that it's over.
