Visions In Education is a free public charter school serving over 7,000 students in Northern California. Visions serves Amador, Contra Costa, El Dorado, Placer, Sacramento, San Joaquin, Solano, Sutter, and Yolo counties. Students may choose from our four personalized learning academies: Home School (TK-8), Online Middle School (7 & 8), Online Independent Study (9-12), or Online University Prep (9-12).

Visions students learn from the safety of home and have flexibility to choose their own schedule. They develop 1:1 relationships with their credentialed teacher and enjoy in-person events and activities like dances, college tours, and field trips. We also offer the support of counselors, tutors, and a special education team.

Visions was founded in 1999 and is fully accredited by the Western Association of Schools and Colleges (WASC).

Online Independent Study High School

Our Independent Study Academy allows students in grades 9-12 to graduate high school from home. Students receive a free Chromebook to complete classes online & have access to weekly in-person events, field trips, college visits, prom & more. This program helps students catch up on credits, attend community college or work. They receive 1:1 attention from credentialed teachers and flexibility.

My experience with Visions has been positive, yet there are still many improvements that can be implemented. As a student who's been with Visions since 4th grade, I transferred to the University Prep program during freshman year, where I was guided by online teachers and counselors. Though everything is online, I wish there were more in-person events held in my area, the Bay Area. I would also like to see more opportunities for STEM majors. There are very few STEM clubs and no events revolving around this field. More STEM courses should also be available to prepare students for university. Visions does not provide an AP courses, but rather encourages taking community college courses. Though I find this beneficial, the courses students want to take are not always available at local colleges because we get last registration. Holding clubs for upperclassmen such as robotics and coding would also prepare them for the real world, giving them more experience if they want to pursue STEM.

Review Visions In Education

My experience at Visions In Education was a positive one. I enjoyed doing my classes online but even when I needed help there were a lot of resources for tutoring. It prepared me really well to take online college courses, in fact I took college courses while still in high school. I was also able to graduate 1 year early due to the flexible curriculum! Overall I would recommend Visions to students who are able to work independently.

I've really enjoyed independent study at Visions! All of my teachers have been awesome, I've felt very supported in my academics, and I feel like it was all around an excellent choice to attend as my high school. I love how independent it is; throughout high school, I've been able to work according to my own schedule, which I feel has really benefitted my learning experience. The only real downside I've noticed is that students need to put in effort to interact with their peers. Visions does a great job organizing in-person events, but because it's independent study, students have to put in the effort to show up. It's not like a normal high school where you're around other students all day. This hasn't been a problem for me personally--if anything, I feel not constantly being around other students has been very beneficial--but that might be more of an issue for more extroverted students. Otherwise, though, it's been an amazing experience, and I've really enjoyed attending my school!
