Diverse, unique, artsy, creative. Where filmmakers, chefs, painters, doctors, engineers and other creatives send their kids to learn how to coexist in a diverse and creative world. Close to the Santa Monica Airport and the beach.
Our school is a small neighborhood gem with some features and programs that are unique to find within LAUSD. Walgrove offers TK, STEAM Studio Lab, free STAR & Beyond The Bell ("coach") after school programs, free after school Musical Theater & violin classes, PS Arts, CGI (math), a 25,000+ sq ft native species-filled outdoor learning area: The Wildlands, an edible garden and orchard, a chicken coop and dedicated, supportive teachers and administration plus a great, involved parent community. Our teachers have professional development with UCLA mentors to stay current with educational developments. Walgrove is also part of the UCLA Tie-in program, offering space to kids of UCLA employees too. Located in Venice/ Mar Vista, we have an organically diverse student population where mainstream an special needs children work side by side, presenting the opportunity to learn from each other. It's really a special place where the whole child is educated in a way that works for each individual!
My child is thriving at Walgrove. They have a "whole child" philosophy which means they believe socio-emotional growth goes hand-in-hand with academics. I am so relived that my child didn't have homework for kindergarten and first grade. Kids need time to decompress and play. According to homework guru, Harris Cooper of Duke University, there is "no evidence that any amount of homework improves the academic performance of elementary students." and that is more important to "study in class." They have many things other schools do not have: a theater program, a STEAM lab, outdoor classroom in their Wildlands, PE plus the kids are learning CGI math (Cognitively Guided Instruction) which increases true problem solving rather than learning by rote. We are very happy with the school. They also do a lot of project-based learning which is far more hands-on. An added bonus: the families are very involved and friendly.
