Health & Safety: There are some bad kids, but the school is generally good. You will see what you expect in any high school, but Washburn Rural is a click better in this aspect.

Overall Experience: Overall, my high school experience was really good. There are people who got more than me out of their time here and some who were not able to gain as much. I truly believe Washburn Rural is a place where you will gain what you want to gain. If you show interest and passion towards your classes, the teachers will reflect that and will show passion when teaching. If you want to take advantage of almost any interest you may have, chances are you will find it or you can create it yourself. High school at Washburn Rural is what you make of it, so use your time well.

Resources & Facilities: The school building itself and the facilities in the school are excellent and the quality of the building is great as well. Technology use is a little lacking, but I am not sure how much more technology is expected at schools, as I received a good education despite a lack of the use of technology. Guidance counselors and college prep resources are very disconnected and protracted. The counselor is not connected with the students at all and college assistance and guidance is only given if it is deeply sought out. parent involvement is relatively high, especially in areas such as judging for debate tournaments. The bus system is above average, but nothing stellar.

Academics: The academic jewel of Washburn Rural is the fledgling International Baccalaureate program. The administration believes the program is the next crucial step to increase the quality of the school, and frankly, its true. The IB program at the school pulls together the best teachers in their respective subject areas in very small classroom settings. Scheduling has been somewhat of an issue and I have had to drop some of my interests, such as band, in order to fulfill other requirements. The curriculum is varied, you can challenge yourself with IB and AP or relax a little with the many other classes and electives offered. The workload is also varied and you can expect more homework from the higher level classes. One popular and successful elective group is the debate and forensics path. The school always sends competitive speakers to nationals every year, but those who simply want to have a little bit of fun are not restricted from trying debate/forensics out.

Student Culture & Diversity: There are many different groups of students at the school, and due to its large size, you will easily find a social scene that fits your interests. The school is very white, but minority students, such as myself, do not feel any adverse effects from this. Acceptance is not an issue, through activities, clubs, and the sheer size of the school, there is a place for everyone.
