The academic jewel of Washburn Rural is the fledgling International Baccalaureate program. The administration believes the program is the next crucial step to increase the quality of the school, and frankly, its true. The IB program at the school pulls together the best teachers in their respective subject areas in very small classroom settings. Scheduling has been somewhat of an issue and I have had to drop some of my interests, such as band, in order to fulfill other requirements. The curriculum is varied, you can challenge yourself with IB and AP or relax a little with the many other classes and electives offered. The workload is also varied and you can expect more homework from the higher level classes. One popular and successful elective group is the debate and forensics path. The school always sends competitive speakers to nationals every year, but those who simply want to have a little bit of fun are not restricted from trying debate/forensics out.
